Have you ever thought about installing a wood burning stove?

in Interior Design on 02/21/18

A wood burning stove installation can be a very creative way to increase the heating in your home without increasing your energy bill to drastically. There is something about a live burning fire that appeals to a lot of people as the pleasant heat and ambient light is really sought after by homeowners all over the world. Let’s look at a few things that should be considered if you are also thinking of getting a wood burning stove.

If you have decided to get a wood burning stove installed in your house, the first thing you need to do is to comply with all local and national regulations. Your building manager, as well as your local fire department, can provide you with all the necessary information. The UK uses Hetas registered fitters and the USA uses a whole array of various regulations for different states.

Perhaps the most important aspect of wood burning stove installation is choosing the right location. You should pick a location in such a way that the heat is circulated all over the house. A suitable location should be well insulated and on the ground floor (or any place where you spend most of your time). You should also keep in mind the space requirements of wood which will be used as a fuel source for your stove. It should be placed in such a way that the heat radiated during use does not damage any nearby household items like furniture.

Time to break this up a bit now and have a look at some of the creative wood-burning stoves that are available today

Something that has the potential to reach surface temperatures of over 400 degrees and an interior temperature of a whopping 1000 degrees, should be treated with respect and care. You don’t want your stove to burn your house down. It should be placed a minimum of 36 inches away from flammable walls and at least 12 inches away from non-combustible walls. You can also add heat shields to protect combustible walls. Wood burning stoves can weigh close to 500 pounds so make sure the floor under your installation space is non-combustible. You can increase the safety of your operation by installing prefabricated ceramic tile stove boards or a concrete slab, beneath the stove.

All stove installers should also give great importance to the chimney and flue as this is where the most danger lies with noxious gases and carbon monoxide, this is also a big part of the regulations. Wood stoves make a lot of smoke which can be very harmful if there is no chimney. It should be capable of carrying all that smoke and small residual particles safely out of your house. Chimneys should also be constructed in accordance with the different regulations so make sure to gather all necessary information well before hand. If you already have a chimney in your house, it can easily be connected to your wood burning stove with only a few minor tweaks.

It is always a good option to get a proper, certified wood burning stove which is sized according to your needs. You don’t want to get an oversized or undersized stove since it will only result in inefficiencies. Although you can easily get your wood burning stove installed by a professional, constructing it yourself is not only possible but also an enjoyable and exciting process.
